Council aims to halve road deaths between 2010 and 2020

The Transport Council, in Luxembourg on Thursday 8 June, adopted conclusions on road safety in which it aims to cut the number of deaths on Europe’s roads by half over the period from 2010 to 2020.

As announced by EUROPE on the eve of the meeting (see EUROPE 11803), European transport ministers adopted their conclusions on road safety. These conclusions endorse the Valletta Declaration of 29 March of this year (see EUROPE 11757) on improving road safety.

Among the commitments made, ministers maintain their desire to reduce the number of people killed in road accidents between 2010 and 2020, holding true to their conclusions of 2 December 2010. They also want to halve the number of those seriously injured by 2030 from the 2020 baseline. Member states also pledge to cooperate with one another and with civil society to improve road safety and develop safer road infrastructure.

In its conclusions, the Council issues calls to the Commission and industry. The Commission is asked to prepare a new road safety policy framework for the decade after 2020 and industry is called on to develop new technologies that “reduce the effects of human error and distraction”.
