08/06/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 8 June, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) urged the Turkish authorities to clarify the charges "swiftly" against lawyer, human rights defender and head of Amnesty International in Turkey Taner Kılıҫ, "in line with the standards of the European Convention on Human Rights and the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights". "In particular, it is important to fully respect the presumption of innocence", the EEAS spokesperson stated in a press release, adding that the European Union is monitoring the on-going procedure closely. The EEAS spokesperson added that Amnesty International is an internationally highly respected member of civil society, which is a key pillar of democracy. Taner Kılıҫ was arrested on 6 June, suspected of having links with the Gulenist movement. (CG)
