EU-UNICEF project operational for education of refugee children in Turkey

08/06/2017 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 8 June, the European Commission announced that the largest ever EU-UNICEF project for the education of refugee children in Turkey has started its first payments.   The project's opening ceremony was held the same day in Ankara and was attended by European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.  The 'Conditional Cash Transfer for Education' (CCTE) project receives €34 million in EU funding under a contract signed with UNICEF on 17 March (see EUROPE 11748).   "The programme is now fully up and running and already we've reached the families of 56,000 refugee children", Stylianides stated in a press release. The aim is to encourage some 230,000 refugee children to attend school in Turkey by the end of 2017.  (AN)
