Creative industry concerned by negotiations on geo-blocking

06/06/2017 (Agence Europe)A number of representatives from the creative industry do not appreciate the position of the European Parliament on the draft regulation to tackle unfair geo-blocking. They made their views known to the European Council on 1 June. The latter is involved in inter-institutional negotiations with Parliament. Co-signatories include Spotify, Digital Europe and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). The letter points out that, “Negotiations should be based on what has been soundly evaluated in the Commission’s public consultation and Impact Assessment”. It should be recalled that Parliament proposes to extend the material scope of the regulation to include intangible non-audiovisual digital content which is protected by copyright (e.g. music, e-books, videogames) and to examine the possibility of including audiovisual services three years after the entry into force of the text (see EUROPE 11774). The co-signatories believe that this is unacceptable. (SPj)
