16/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 15 February, the Commission announced that it had sent Austria a reasoned opinion for its failure to fully transpose Directive 2015/1127 (directive of the Commission modifying annex II of the framework directive on waste, 2008/98/EC) into its internal law. The deadline to do so was 31 July 2016. This directive aims to take account of the local climate conditions in the energy yield of waste incineration plants for destruction, to allow some of these to be categorised as waste recovery plants. Following a letter of formal notice in September 2016, Austria has adopted a number of transposition measures, but the Commission states that the Austrian regulatory framework does not respect the provisions on energy efficiency and the energy recovery of waste in compliance with the hierarchy of waste treatment options.
