“Social dumping” in the road haulage sector and the European motor vehicle market surveillance agency were the main dossiers discussed by Karima Delli (Greens/EFA, France) at the European Parliament transport and tourism (TRAN) committee she chaired with the Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc, during a dinner organised on Tuesday 14 February in Strasbourg.
On the issue of “social dumping” and market access in the road sector, the European Commission intends to present an initiative at the end of May. The dossier is creating tension in relations between Western, Central and Eastern Europe (see EUROPE 11716) and negotiations in this area look like they are going to be difficult.
The idea of setting up a European motor-vehicle market surveillance agency is supported by many MEPs, particularly the Greens, Social Democrats and a number of Liberals. It was, however, rejected by the internal market and consumer protection committee (IMCO) (see EUROPE 11722). Nevertheless, the proposal will be put back on the table through an amendment during the plenary session vote that is likely to take place in April. (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
