Committee of the Regions calls for European strategy to tackle alcoholism

13/02/2017 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 9 February, members of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) adopted an opinion submitted by Ms Ewa-May Karlsson (ALDE, Sweden), which contains a number of recommendations to tackle alcoholism. Members are therefore demanding that: - the banning of marketing or advertising of alcohol to children, particularly on social media; individual controls and self-regulation in the sector are brought to an end; information campaigns are stepped up, particularly in schools and by labelling products aimed at women and children; very cheap alcohol sales are reduced, particularly those online; inspections of alcohol sales outlets are stepped up and that the gathering of data on alcohol-related problems is enhanced. The CoR also supports the proposal for an alcohol interlock system for transport, for which the European Council has been calling for a long time (ETSC) (see EUROPE 11696).
