New government approved by parliament

Brussels, 19/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 18 September, the Slovenian parliament gave its backing to the composition of the centre-left government formed by Miro Cerar, who became prime minister after early elections in July. The coalition around his party, the SMC, formed by the Desus party and the social democratic party, has 52 of the 90 seats in parliament. The Slovenian parliament gave its approval by 54 votes to 25. Cerar has promised to cut the country's deficit to 3% of GDP next year by pursuing a “restrictive” budget policy, reducing public spending and improving tax collection. In parallel, he said that the government was planning to aid growth by selling off public assets. The new finance minister, Dusan Mramor, said earlier in the week that the new government would continue the previous government's privatisation programme. (EL)
