Warning of the current “deceptive calm” in the eurozone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called in a speech to the Bundestag on Wednesday 29 January for a “real economic union” in Europe through treaty change, saying that the current level of economic co-ordination in the eurozone is unsatisfactory. “Without decisive progress on this front, without a quantum leap, we won't overcome the European sovereign-debt crisis.
