Brussels, 29/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - If the European Parliament does not object, the European Commission will freely be able to adopt several regulations aiming to amend and update the current legislation on food additives and flavourings. On the sidelines of the Ecofin Council on 28 January, the Council of the EU decided, without debate, not to oppose - a formality in line with the regulatory procedure with scrutiny.
The legislation concerned is: - a Commission regulation amending Regulation 1334/2008 to remove 19 substances from the EU list of flavourings and source materials authorised for use in food (amendment of annex 1 of the above-mentioned regulation); - a Commission regulation amending Regulation 1881/2006 which establishes a maximum level of 2 mg/kg for citrinin in red yeast rice preparations; - a Commission regulation amending Annex II of Regulation 133/2008 to authorise the use of polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer in solid food supplements and assigning it the E1208 E-number; - a Commission regulation amending the same annex of Regulation 133/2008 and the annex to Regulation 231/2012 to authorise the use of E450 (ix), still called magnesium dihyrdogen diphosphate, as a raising agent and acidity regulator in certain food categories; - and the regulation authorising the use of 2-phenyl-3, 3 bis phthalimidine, and 1,3 bis benzene as food contact material.
