ENISA analyses internet services security

Brussels, 29/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 28 January, the EU's cyber security Agency, ENISA, published a series of new studies about the current security practices of Trust Service Providers (TSPs) that aims to restore citizens' trust in internet services. These reports analyse current practices of TSPs, the companies providing services that help improve the security of information exchanged by e-mail. They also propose a number of recommendations to improve trust and effective interoperability internationally between future TSPs that will soon benefit from new rules and the cyber government services that use them. Executive Director of ENISA Professor Udo Helmbrecht stated: “It is vital… that citizens trust their online services and therefore implement the best technical e-signature solutions. These best practices need to be constantly reviewed through frequent risk analysis in order to keep up with the technical developments and overcome evolving cyber security challenges”.

ENISA is recommending a mutual assistance system between supervisory bodies in the member states and end-to-end encrypted communication with TSPs and e-government services in order to safeguard EU citizens' privacy. The Greek Presidency soon hopes to see the regulation on e-identification and trust services in e-commerce in the internal market adopted. The framework proposed by the Commission seeks to enable safe electronic and uninterrupted communication between enterprises, individuals and the public authorities and therefore help to increase the efficiency of public and private online services for e-commerce in the EU.
