29/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - 2030 Framework incomplete without heating and cooling sector. For the Euroheat & Power association, it is an issue of credibility: the 2030 framework for energy and the climate - proposed by the European Commission on 22 January (see EUROPE 11002) - has left the heating and cooling and combined heat and power sector on the sidelines of the action. This sector accounts for 45% of final energy consumption in the EU, compared with 20% for electricity and 26% for transport. Euroheat & Power is urging the EU institutions to take “corrective measures” in order to acknowledge the sector's integral role in the energy system and that it must be used to optimise global performance. “In cities, where demand is most dense, district heating and cooling networks are a proven solution. In more rural areas, other options may be a better fit. The point is, a wide range of effective solutions are available. We need only find the conviction and imagination to pursue them”, ACEA states.
