Brussels, 29/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 29 January, British media stated that the UK will welcome 500 particularly vulnerable Syrian refugees on its soil, following an agreement tied up with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. This compromise, which was due to be discussed in the British Parliament the same day, was reached with difficulty as UK Prime Minister David Cameron's government has thus far not wanted to be involved in the UN programme, the BBC states.
Over 500 refugees are due to be welcomed to the UK with their families. Their status and their rights on British soil are still to be clarified. European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström welcomed this announcement on Twitter. (SP/transl.fl)
