Brussels, 28/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European Greens Party is to announce on Wednesday 29 January its double candidacy for the presidency of the European Commission, while voting on-line for the first party primaries which ended during the evening of Tuesday 28 January. Monica Frassoni, José Bové, Ska Keller and Rebecca Harms have been competing since November to become top of the list for their party. After the vote, two candidates (one man and one woman, or two women) will be selected as the Greens' standard bearers during the European election campaign. Although voting and turnout trends had not yet been published during the evening of Tuesday 28 January, Monica Frassoni, an Italian candidate, said these first primaries had gone off rather well. Despite a few, mainly technical problems, the candidates could see that “e-democracy is working well”, Frassoni stated. Physical debates also accompanied the process with the four candidates having gone to Italy, Great Britain, France and Germany, as well as Greece. Several major themes, common to all countries, have emerged from these debates although the hierarchy given to the themes differs from country to country. According to Frassoni, they cover “response to the crisis, employment and immigration”. EUROPE will come back to this at a later date. (SP/transl.jl)
