Brussels, 28/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - Almost €140 million were released by the European Commission on Monday 27 January for the funding of five development projects in the Republic of Guinea. This is in implementation of the Council's decision of 12 December 2013 to resume full cooperation between Guinea and the EU (see EUROPE 10983).
The funds, allocated under the 10th European Development Fund (which covers the period 2008-2013), will be used to support the government's efforts in promoting good governance, protecting human rights and improving mobility and road infrastructure.
€83 million will be used for a support project for the transport sector (PAST); €20 million will be for a programme to support justice sector reform (PARJU); €15 million will be for a programme to support reforms in the security sector (second strand of PARSS); €12 million will be for a programme to support the reform of public finances (PARFIP); and €10 million will be for a programme of sectoral support to decentralisation and devolution (PASDD).
The conventions for funding the above projects were signed in Brussels on Monday by Andris Piebalgs, European Development Commissioner, and Kerfalla Yansane, Minister of State responsible for the economy and finance of the Republic of Guinea.
December last, the Council took the view that, with the holding of inclusive and peaceful legislative elections on 28 September in Guinea, the conditions for complete resumption of cooperation under the 10th EDF had been met. Development cooperation had been partially suspended following the military coup d'état of 23 December 2008. (AN/transl.jl)
