Brussels, 26/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament (EP) constitutional affairs committee (AFCO) gave its support on Thursday 26 January to amending the European electoral system so that, in the European elections, citizens will be able to vote for a national list and a transnational list. The committee gave its backing to the report by Andrew Duff calling for the election of 25 MEPs from a single European constituency on the basis of transnational lists. “This report is the result of a compromise but a compromise useful for the emergence of an EU-wide democracy”, said Duff. The election of transnational representatives “clearly meets the need to further politicise the European debate. Europe needs politicians who are fully committed to the emergence of a political union”¸ argued ALDE Group leader Guy Verhofstadt. “Member states have to take their responsibility. Would they want to see the emergence of a European participatory democracy or would they prefer to retain a system that promotes confrontation between nation states?” he added. After being adopted in plenary session, the report will have to be approved by the Council. (CG/transl.rt)
