Danish roadmap for gender equality in Parliament

Brussels, 26/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Manu Sareen, the Danish minister for gender equality, is sensitive to the question of violence against women and will take the subject into account during work on the matter of gender equality under Danish EU presidency of the Council of Ministers. He has developed priorities that will be tackled under his six-month mandate before MEPs of the committee on women's rights and general equality (FEMM). The under-representation of women on company boards will be the subject of a debate during the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Council (EPSCO) in February, in order to fuel a Commission report to be published in March on the impact of self-regulation. A second priority, also tackled earlier by the FEMM committee, concerns women and climate change. Conclusions on the matter are due to be adopted at the EPSCO Council in June and will include indicators on the lack of female representation in decision-making relating to climate change, and in educational systems of scientific leaning. Discussion will also turn to the question of education and gender segregation in this field during a seminar organised under Danish presidency. Finally, the Presidency will conduct debates to be held in New York during the annual Conference of the Status of Women early March, which is to focus on women in rural areas. (MD/transl.jl)
