Creative industries in digital age

Brussels, 26/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - The question asked at the second Intellectual Property Forum held at the European Parliament on 24 January was what should be envisaged in the way of legislation in order to exploit the huge potential of the audiovisual and media sectors, which are undergoing technological changes that modify their distribution models. Neelie Kroes, Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, took the floor to speak of the various European Commission initiatives on this subject. She highlighted the need to combat online piracy by using proportionate means, and especially by proposing legal content that is more attractive than illegal content. In her view, Europe still has a long way to go to use the potential provided by new technologies to full advantage. She said: “We urgently need to do much more in our quest for the European Digital Single Market, to generate more growth and jobs, to better reward and recognise creators and to offer a better deal to European consumers”. Kroes also announced her intention to publish a text on “Connected TV”, in order to better define the development of this new technology and to draw the best results from it. Connected TV is television which is connected, either directly or indirectly, to the internet in order to make all services available to televiewers. Once connected, the viewer thus becomes an emitter and not just a receiver terminal. In a press release, French EPP member Marielle Gallo called for “cooperation internet”. Political decision-makers have the responsibility of helping cultural and creative creators and industries to adapt to the needs of consumers in the digital age, with the help of the Commission and the European Parliament, she explained.
