Brussels, 11/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - On a visit to Brussels on Thursday 10 February, United States Deputy Trade Representative Miriam Sapiro urged the EU to open its market to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). “When Europeans come to the United States, they come and enjoy our cuisine with no concerns whatsoever”, she said at a meeting organised by the think tank The European Policy Centre (EPC). “Why should we have different standards in Europe?” she asked, stating that she would raise this issue with Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht on Thursday afternoon. “It is important to address, and to continue to press the Commission to go the right way. Decisions on GM foods need to be science-based” Sapiro argued. “Hopefully these products can be approved, even though we recognise concerns among some consumers”, she said. (E.H./transl.rt)
