EU to suspend import duties on cereals

Brussels, 11/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - At a forthcoming meeting of the EU management committee, perhaps as early as the one on 24 February, the Commission will have a proposal to suspend import duties on certain tariff quotas of cereals until the end of the current marketing year (30 June 2011) put to the vote. The Commission hopes in this way ease the situation on the Community market when the situation remains very tense on international cereals markets, particularly wheat.

At the management committee meeting on Thursday 10 February, the Commission presented a working paper calling for suspension of import duties on low and medium quality wheat and on barley. This measure, which a great many European industrialists, in particular producers of feeds for livestock, have been urging, would run until 30 June. “The proposal is to help facilitate feed cereals imports from outside the EU and so to reduce tensions on the European markets” a source said.
