11/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - Vojvodina in pole position on sustainable energy in Balkans. A peer review conducted by the Assembly of European Regions (AER) has congratulated energy sector stakeholders in Vojvodina, an autonomous province in Serbia (which is itself a member of the Energy Community), for their state-of-the-art practices and their expertise in sustainable energy solutions. Vojvodina, which receives strong financial support from the EU and where the energy sector represents 25% of the national GDP, has enormous potential for producing energy from abundant local renewable resources such as wind, solar power, biogas, biomass and hydropower. In Novi Sad, the provincial authority is hoping for huge knock-on effects for growth, employment, and adoption of higher environmental and energy efficiency standards from projects such as the creation of a sustainable community in the municipality of Temerin.
