Brussels, 08/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 7 October, the EU Standing Committee for Protected Geographical Indications and Denominations of Origin approved the registration of the denominations “Gouda Holland” and “Edam Holland”, each the name of a Dutch cheese, as protected geographical indications (PGI). However, “Edam” and “Gouda” will continue to be considered to be generic denominations and will not, therefore, be protected under Community regulations on protected designations and geographical indications. Gouda Holland is a double cream cheese produced in the Netherlands from cows' milk from Dutch dairy farms. Edam Holland cheese is produced from milk from Dutch herds. The Commission has still to formally adopt the regulation protection the “Gouda Holland” and “Edam Holland” PGIs. (L.C./transl.rt)
