Luxembourg, 08/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - The investigation underway in France into the existence of a file on the Roma will have no consequences for the current dispute over freedom of movement, Justice Commissioner, Viviane Reding announced in Luxembourg on Friday. “We have taken note of the declaration of the French authorities to open an internal investigation into these files and we will be watching the conclusions of this investigation with great interest”, she said, further to a meeting with the justice ministers of the EU. She acknowledged that if their existence was confirmed, files of this kind would be a “new element to add to this dossier”, adding that it would have no repercussions on the case regarding France's transposition of the 2004 directive on the freedom of movement. The commissioner did not indicate that she wished to open an investigation at European level, as called for on Friday by the Socialist and Liberal groups of the European Parliament. As regards the chapter on free movement, the commissioner reiterated that if Paris did not respond by 15 October, the launch of infringement proceedings would be “automatically included on the agenda of the meeting of the commissioners scheduled for 28 October”, the day of the European summit (EUROPE 10231).
