Brussels, 08/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - As the second round of negotiations between the EU and the Mercosur region, scheduled for next week in Brussels, approaches, European chambers of commerce in both Europe and South America - Eurochambres, Eurocâmaras Brazil and Eurocamara Uruguay -urge EU and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela which is in the process of accession) leaders to step up a gear to conclude the free trade agreement. “If we fail to reach an agreement, China will surpass the EU and tail behind the United States as Latin America's main export market by the next decade. We are aware that the agriculture chapter is a stumbling block, but we also know that there is always room to find creative mechanisms to prevent harm to vulnerable sectors - as the safeguard clause of the recent EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement has proven,” Eurochambres says in a press release. The chambers of commerce also stress the importance of making provision for specific instruments that will ensure and support European SME access to the South American market. (E.H./transl.rt).
