Brussels, 10/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - The commissioner for human rights at the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarberg, assured the French authorities on Thursday 9 September that he was not attacking Paris when he compared the rhetoric against the Roma to that of the Nazis. According to the spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry, Bernard Valero, “Mr Hammarberg said his remarks were not aimed at the French government. We have noted this and point out that measures taken by the French government are in line with French, European and international law”. The day before, Hammarberg had made some harsh comments about what some politicians are saying on the Roma. “The current political rhetoric against the Roma is similar to that used by Nazis and the fascist regimes. Politicians should show themselves more responsible”, Hammarberg had written on Twitter. (B.C./transl.jl)
