10/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, is calling for a “quantum leap” to be made in economic governance of the eurozone. In an interview with The Financial Times of Friday 10 September, Trichet recommends strengthening budgetary oversight by member states, with the establishment of semi-automatic procedures and sanctions (the Commission will make legislative proposals on 29 September). Although refusing the idea of excluding eurozone countries that systematically violate the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP), Trichet considers that “temporary suspension of voting rights is something that should be explored”.
