Brussels, 10/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - Meeting on the fringes of the Gymnich-type Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 10 September, the EU trade ministers agreed “unambiguously” to grant Pakistan preferential access to the EU market to help its economy, devastated by unprecedented flooding last month. Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere said the details of the deal would be hammered out at a later date. The granting of SPG+ privileges to Pakistan, a system of special tariff reductions provided to the most vulnerable developing countries that meet good governance and sustainable development requirements, would be over-ambitious so the Commission is suggesting that the EU import duty on 13 types of textile products should be temporarily lifted for Pakistan.
