06/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a letter sent to Commissioner Pascal Lamy, the French Socialist Harlem Desire, EP member, calls on the EU to support the interpretation of the ADPIC agreement and the pertinent WHO texts made by South Africa and Brazil in order to be capable of fighting against AIDS by resorting to the importing or production of generic medicines. How can we balance the payment of royalties to companies, which are already making considerable profits and access to health care for people that are among the poorest in the world?, wonders Mr Desire. Furthermore, in a press release, the Belgian President of the Green/ALE group, Paul Lannoye, considers "immoral" the court action initiated by certain pharmaceutical groups against the new policy, which the South African government is attempting to establish.
