Brussels, 06/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - CFSP High Representative Javier Solana condemned the escalation of violence with the attacks last Sunday in the region of Tanusevci in the border area between the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the FRY. The perpetrators of these acts should understand that they are doing great damage to the image and to the interests of ethnic Albanians throughout South Eastern Europe, he states in a declaration. He calls on all Albanian political leaders in the region to clearly distance themselves from these acts to "isolate the extremists" and to work to ensure compliance with the agreement on border limits, recently signed by Belgrade and Skopje. Mr Solana said he felt particularly encouraged to see that the main ethnic Albanian leaders from FYROM have clearly condemned the attacks. He pointed out that he is in constant contact with the authorities of Skopje.
