The Belgian economic review Trends has published its annual "Top 30,000" listing the largest companies in Belgium, in terms of consolidated accounts for the year 1999. Ranking first, DELHAIZE LE LION is well ahead of TRACTEBEL, SOLVAY, FORD BELGIUM, TOYOTA EUROPE and SIDMAR. Among the top ten companies, three are of Belgian nationality: DELHAIZE, SOLVAY and AGFA-GEVAERT. Together, the 29,143 industrial and commercial enterprises have recorded profits of BF 796 billion, that is, 159 billion more than in 1998. If one adds the profits made by banks and insurance companies and those of portfolio companies, the profits taking all companies together amounts to BF 1,574 billion. The record profit maker is PETROFINA (diluted since then in TOTALFINAELF) with BF 81 billion, ahead of ELECTRABEL (35 billion), TRACTEBEL (24 billion), SOLVAY (19 billion) and BELGACOM (17 billion). The total turnover of commercial and industrial companies reached BF 16,135 billion, or 4.6% better in 1999.
