Brussels, 01/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Eva Zetterberg, deputy spokesperson in the Swedish Parliament was selected by the European Commission to head the European observers mission that will follow the elections on 8 April in Peru. Invited by the Peruvian authorities, in place since the political crisis that lead to the resignation of President Fujimori last September, the mission is formed of ten long-term observers and around thirty short-term observers. Last December, the Commission had set aside EUR 1.7 million for the monitoring of these elections (see EUROPE OF 21 December, p.7). The Organisation of American State also sent observers on the ground.
