Brussels, 01/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to allow the South African group Sasol to take over Condea, company that pools the chemicals activities of the German firm RWE-DEA, specialised in public utilities services and energy. The activities in question comprise the assets located in Germany, operating companies in Italy and the Netherlands, shares in sales subsidiaries in France, Spain and Belgium, well as several non-European companies. Saso's main activity is the manufacture and marketing of liquid fuels, pipeline gas, waxes, chemicals and plastics, as well as the marketing of coal, whereas, for its part, Condea has activities in the production and marketing of commodity and specialty chemicals. The Commission considers that that the parties' activities are largely complementary in terms of products and geography. Although their activities overlap for types of chemicals in the product areas of solvents and n-paraffins areas at least at EEA level, world level even, the accumulated market shares nevertheless remain insignificant and raise no competition concerns.
