THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/italy

12/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - Comments by MFE. The reference made in recent days by Prime Minister Berlusconi and Interior Minister Maroni regarding Italy's exit from the EU have aroused great concern within the European Federalist Movement (Movimento Federalista Europeo, MFE) which, in a press release, points out that, at a time of globalisation, Italy has no future without Europe. It states that there is no prospect of progress or of well-being outside a policy for a democratic Europe that is able to meet the challenges facing us. The MFE invites Italy's political leaders to act along the lines of the European federalism defended by Luigi Einaudi, Alcide De Gasperi and Altiero Spinelli. It calls for a European federation, saying that, if one truly wants more Europe, then one must commit oneself to its political unity, not threaten it with division or with departure. (Gp/transl.jl)
