Brussels, 12/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) have called on the European Union to support the setting up of a UN Commission of Inquiry into war crimes and crimes against humanity in Burma/Myanmar. The call was launched on Tuesday 12 April as the EU was re-assessing its policy towards Burma. In a statement, ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow said that the support of Europe and the rest of the international community should be given to international moves for a UN inquiry, “to ensure that justice is done on behalf of the victims of the regime's reign of oppression and violence”. Her opposite number at the ETUC, John Monks, argued that “Europe needs to take a strong stand and show that the regime cannot continue to act with impunity”. (G.B./transl.rt)
