Brussels, 30/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Janez Potoènik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, announced on Monday 29 June that the European executive body would be launching a special call for proposals for the Western Balkan region this summer. The call for proposals will focus on the specific needs of the region regarding research capacity. The announcement was made on the occasion of the commissioner's visit to Serbia where he was taking part in an information event on research in the EU. The exact content and the amount granted in the call for proposals will not be revealed till end July. Speaking in Belgrade, Mr Potoènik addressed Serbian ministries, scientists and corporate representatives to underline the importance of enhanced cooperation with Serbia on research, mainly in the context of the European Research Area (ERA). He said: “In times of crisis, building a sound and sustainable economy requires R&D investments by Serbia and the Western Balkan region”. He went on to add that, by strengthening scientific cooperation, this will make Serbia familiar with the EU decision-making process. The integration of the country into the ERA, he said, is an important step in the process leading up to EU membership. Since 1 January 2007, Serbia has been involved in the 7th EU framework programme on research and development (FPRD) and can participate in all calls for proposals. Over 90 candidates have already obtained EU funding for undertaking research and forming networks with top quality research centres in the EU and in the region of the Western Balkans. (B.C./transl.jl)
