Stockholm, 30/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - The day before Sweden takes over to hold the EU Council Presidency on 1 July (kick-off will be given with the meeting between the European Commission and the government on Wednesday in Stockholm), Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt reiterated on Tuesday 30 June that climate change (to be discussed at the Copenhagen Conference in December) and ways to address the economic and financial crisis will be the two main priorities of the next six months (see also our dossier in EUROPE Documents No2520). On the subject of the economic crisis, Mr Reinfeldt said “the time for pushing for more stimulus packages is over” and that the Swedish Presidency hoped for closer coordination between the 27 on an “exit strategy” to return in the medium term to budgetary consolidation and a sustained effort to put public finance in order in member states. The Presidency will also focus its effort on the supervision and regulation of financial markets. Mr Reinfeldt said they awaited Commission proposals in September and hoped to reach an agreement in December. (H.B./transl.jl)
