02/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Belgian MEP Jean-Luc Dehaene (EPP-ED); EP rapporteur on the institutional implications of the Lisbon Treaty, fears that there will be some degree of shambles between 7 June (the date of the European elections) and the European Council of 18-19 June, with regard to the appointment of the President of the incoming European Commission. In his report, Dehaene proposed that, before the European elections, the Council and EP agree on exactly how the process (consultation of the EP, nomination of a candidate by the Council, and approval by the EP) would unfold, but the Czech Presidency chose not to take up his suggestion. In the newspaper Soir of 1 June, Dehaene warns that “the European Parliament will not just rubber stamp” the Council's candidate. This person will have to have “a clear agenda” on the main challenges currently facing the EU, such as tackling the economic crisis and climate change. The candidate will also have to tell the EP how he/she intends to organise the Commission, the former Belgian prime minister said. (H.B./transl.rt)
