Brussels, 02/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 30 May, Italy stated that it was against Europe's taking in any former detainees of the US prison camp at Guantanamo. “The United States asked us to take in a few former detainees, no more than two or three. But I am against the idea,” said Italian Home Affairs Minister Roberto Maroni following a two-day meeting of G8 justice and home affairs ministers in Rome. He said he was “against countries, which do not have the legal means of keeping them in prison, taking former detainees,” AFP reports. In the Schengen area, “we cannot allow people suspected of terrorism to be free to move around,” he added. “The terrorist threat level is high enough already. I don't want it to rise any further,” he went on to say. The issue will be discussed on Thursday when EU justice and home affairs ministers meet in Luxembourg. (B.C./transl.rt)
