Brussels, 02/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Muslims in Europe suffer serious discrimination, states a report published by the European Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) on Thursday 28 May. One Muslim in three (34% of men and 26% of women) says he/she has been the victim of racist crime, says the report which was carried out on 28,500 people in 14 EU member states. Discrimination is most common in employment. A quarter of Muslims surveyed (25%) said they had been stopped by police during the previous 12 months. Of these, the FRA says, 40% believed that they had been stopped because of their ethnic appearance. Similarly, most Muslims surveyed who said they had suffered discrimination over the previous 12 months believed that their ethnic appearance was the principal motive behind the discrimination. Just like other minority groups, most Muslims surveyed (79%) do not report discrimination or racist crimes to any organisation.
