GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/state aid

02/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Within the next few days, the European Commission expects to receive detailed information from Berlin on aid granted within the framework of the Opel/Vauxhall takeover by Canadian company Magna, states Jonathan Todd, spokesman. Speaking to the press, on Tuesday 2 June, he stressed the bridging loan proposed by Berlin looks at first sight as though it comes within a general German state aid plan approved in February. If such is the case, formal approval of the measure in question is not required - the Commission will only have to check conformity. Magna, backed by Russian investors, has been chosen by the German state to take over Opel from the American parent company, General Motors, which filed for bankruptcy on Monday 1 June.
