Brussels, 02/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Poland's accession to the European Union has made it a both a transit and destination country for people trafficking, said UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons Joy Ngozi on Friday 29 May. The scale of the trafficking was already great in Poland, but it has become worse over the course of the last five years as a result of Poland's joining the EU and becoming part of the Schengen area, she said. “The endemic forms of trafficking include, but are not limited to, trafficking for labour exploitation, for prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation,” Ngozi said. She argued that, while Poland had taken action against this scourge, much more still had to be done. For example, Poland has no clear definition of trafficking in its criminal law, labour exploitation is on the rise and access to aid for victims of trafficking is limited. In addition, judicial proceedings in trafficking cases are unduly long, lasting two years on average. (B.G./transl.rt)
