THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/european elections

02/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Sweden, Finland and Estonia have begun the European election, opening early voting. After nine days of early voting in Sweden, almost 230,000 voters, or 3.2% of the electorate, have already cast their votes. During the previous European elections in 2004, 1.68% of the electorate voted during the corresponding early voting period. In Finland, after two days of early voting, more than 232,000, or 5.6% of the electorate, had voted, compared with 4.7% during the corresponding period in 2004. In Estonia, voters were able, for the first time, to vote early electronically. Since 28 May, almost 6,800 have voted in this way. Early voting was also possible in some polling stations on 1 June.
