Commission names and shames Spain and Portugal over nature protection infringements

Brussels, 23/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided, on Thursday 19 February, to begin infringement procedures against Spain and Portugal for failure to comply with European nature protection legislation under Directives 92/43/EEC, known as the habitats directive, and 79/409/EEC, known as the birds directive.

Spain will be sent a reasoned opinion (second stage in the procedure under Article 226 of the Treaty) for its failure to implement the additional measures it had...
