23/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 18 February, European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Peter Hustinx adopted two opinions relating to the proposal for a review of the EURODAC regulation (EURODAC is the database which contains asylum seekers' fingerprints) and the proposal for the overhaul of the Dublin regulation, which determines the EU member state responsible for an asylum application. The proposals are part of a raft of proposals brought forward by the European Commission in December 2008 (see EUROPE 9796 and 9795). They represent “a step in the right direction,” according to the EDPS. Hustinx welcomed the considerable attention that has been devoted in both proposals to the fundamental rights of third-country nationals and/or stateless persons and, in particular, the protection of personal data.
