Brussels, 02/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has published a list of the 27 young winners of the second "Juvenes Translatores" (Young Translators) competition announced on 1 September last year. Stressing that this competition is "a true challenge in testing the language skills learnt at school" and at the same time "a foretaste of what it is like to work as a translator", the multilingualism commissioner, Leonard Orban, praised the success of the competition in schools throughout Europe, with an increased rate of participation compared to last year's first competition. In total, 2,247 pupils from 593 secondary schools took part in the competition, which was held simultaneously throughout the EU in 27 languages. The copies were marked by a panel of professional translators and revisers from DG Translation the Commission, who said that they were very impressed by the high quality of the translations, with 10% of the students achieving a very high grade. Each of the 27 prize-winners will enjoy a three-day trip to Brussels for two people and will be presented with their awards at a prize-giving ceremony to take place on 3 April. The names of the winners and their translations have been published at http: //ec.europa.eu/translation/contest/index_fr.htm. (I.L./transl.fl)
