Brussels, 02/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - The EU welcomes the agreement to form a government of national unity in Zimbabwe but warned that this government would be “judged by its actions”. In the meantime, the European sanctions in place against the current leaders of the country remain in place. The main opposition party, Morgan Tsvanguirai's MDC, announced on 30 January that it would enter the unity government with Robert Mugabe. Javier Solana, the EU's high representative for the CFSP, declared that he welcomed “the agreement reached by the Zimbabwean parties, in particular to establish the Government of National Unity”. He called on all parties to comply in good faith with the agreement reached. Mr Solana stressed that only in the context of an equitable political solution could the plight of the Zimbabwean people be alleviated and added that the new government “will be judged by its actions”.
