No Eurogroup summit in immediate future

Brussels, 02/02/2009 (Agence Europe) -The European Commission has abandoned the idea of holding a meeting of the heads of state of the eurozone in the immediate future. According to the press, the idea of a further Eurogroup summit was supported by Paris as a way of consolidating the solidarity of the countries of the eurozone given the scale of the financial crisis. "This may prove useful if needs be, if there is a consensus on the need for such a meeting, if the timing is right and if preparations are adequate", a Commission spokesperson told the press on Monday 2 February. However, "it does not appear that there is currently consensus on holding a meeting of this kind at this time", he added. Germany, certainly, is against the idea. As the European countries of the G20 meet in Berlin on 22 February to prepare the London meeting (2 April), the option of holding a Eurogroup summit at the same time was rejected on Monday by a spokesperson to the German government. More generally, "the Chancellor does not feel that a meeting of the heads of state and government of the Eurogroup is necessary ", the spokesperson added. (A.B./trans.fl)
