Salmonella declines in EU but Campylobacter cases increase and listeriosis remains worrying

Brussels, 20/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Campylobacter infections (bacteria mainly found in raw poultry meat, generally causing diarrhoea, cramps and fever) still top the list of zoonotic diseases in the European Union while the number of cases of infection in humans due to Salmonella (bacteria present in pork and poultry meat) has fallen for the fourth year in a row.
