French presidency hoping for signal from European Council on applying reduced VAT rates to certain services

Brussels, 02/12/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 2 December, European finance ministers were unable to reach an agreement on the French presidency's draft compromise on reforming reduced value added tax (VAT) rates (Europe 9698). The positions held by delegations have not changed since November. Around 20 Member States support reduced VAT rates when it does not have an impact on the financial market; several countries - Germany at the head of them - are hostile to a reduction (Europe 9775)....
