Referendum obligation on future EU accessions is abolished but applicants still have major hurdle to cross

Brussels, 24/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - France has done away with the obligation to submit future EU memberships to referendum. In 2005, the French Constitution had stipulated that any future enlargement - after that of Croatia - should be compulsorily ratified by referendum (a provision introduced by President Chirac in a concern to reassure the French about Turkey's candidature).
